Boise State University will offer a new scholarship, geared to rural students.

The “Future Forward” scholarship will be available to high school seniors who have been admitted to Boise State this fall. In order to qualify for the $1,000 scholarship, students must have a 3.0 GPA and a demonstrated financial need.

“As someone who grew up in a small town in Wyoming, I understand how little support institutions across the nation have provided for rural students,” said Boise State President Marlene Tromp. “This scholarship will not only transform the lives of these students, but it will have a tremendous impact on their communities.”

About 100 students could receive the new rural scholarship, part of the university’s effort to provide scholarships to an additional 400 Idaho students this fall.

The new scholarship also aligns with another Boise State rural initiative, announced in November: a program to fuse online courses with on-the-ground academic support. The pilot program will begin this fall, in McCall, Mountain Home and Payette.
