The Kellogg School District has settled civil lawsuits with a former student and a former employee.
The separate lawsuits stem from a student assembly from the spring of 2023, when graduating senior Travis Lohr said, “Guys are guys and girls are girls. There is no in-between.” Lohr was barred from the school’s commencement ceremony.
A day after the student assembly, bus driver Dakota Mailloux attended a protest to show support for Lohr. His contract was later terminated.
Lohr and Mailloux filed separate lawsuits last summer, saying the district’s actions had violated their First Amendment rights to freedom of speech.
The district and Mailloux reached an $88,000 settlement in February, and Lohr received $100,000 in May, the Coeur d’Alene Press reported Friday.
Contacted by the Coeur d’Alene Press, Kellogg School District officials said they couldn’t discuss the settlements, saying they had signed a nondisclosure agreement.
