Meridian sets August bond issue

As expected, the Meridian School District will go to voters on Aug. 26 to seek a building bond issue.

The amount is now set, according to the Idaho Statesman’s Bill Roberts. The state’s largest school district will seek a $104 million bond issue that breaks down as follows:

  • Two new middle schools, costing $60 million.
  • A new elementary school, costing $12 million.
  • Completion of the Meridian High School remodel, costing $24 million.
  • Land purchases for new school sites, costing $8 million.

The plans for a bond issue are not surprising. District officials have been talking for more than a year about pursuing a 2014 bond issue — the first such request since 2005, when voters approved a $139 million bond issue.

But this will be the second time this year that the Meridian district has gone to voters seeking support. In March, voters OK’d a two-year, $28 million supplemental levy.
