Thousands of fourth graders celebrate Idaho history

Idaho history came to life for more than 3,400 West Ada School District fourth graders on Friday. The Meridian Middle School sports field was filled with children and 42 hands-on learning stations to celebrate the 30th annual Idaho History Rendezvous.

“This is a great experience for the students, it is a combination of what they have learned in the classroom,” said Barbara Parham, a fourth grade teacher at Desert Sage Elementary School. “The kids get to see the things they have learned about and actually touch them.”

Students rotated through different time periods of Idaho history relating to topics such as the Oregon Trail, Native American artifacts, geology and pre-historic tools.

“About two hundred volunteers come out every year, most are still actively involved with history and take part in gold mining or fur trapping,” said Rendezvous coordinator Jock Summers. “The students look forward to this event every year.”
