Have you ever wondered how state superintendent Sherri Ybarra’s salary stacks up against her peers?
Wonder no more.
Education Week produced a fascinating comparison of state superintendents’ salaries.
The takeaways:
- At $105,771, Ybarra’s annual salary ranks No. 45 among the 50 states and the District of Columbia. By comparison, Mississippi Superintendent of Education Carey Wright earns the highest salary in the nation, at $300,000, while Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas trails all her peers with a salary of $85,000.
- Ybarra’s pay compares a little bit more favorably with her fellow elected superintendents, who earn an average salary of $115,000. Gubernatorial or board-appointed school chiefs earn $158,000 and $223,000, respectively.
- Twenty-seven school district superintendents earned more than Ybarra did in 2016-17. But that’s not unusual. In only nine states did the state superintendent out-earn the chief of the state’s largest school district. Mary Ann Ranells — superintendent of the West Ada School District, Idaho’s largest — received $162,000 in 2016-17. Blaine County’s GwenCarol Holmes received the highest superintendent’s salary in the state, at $173,880.
