Gubernatorial candidate Raul Labrador rolled out a marquee endorsement Wednesday, announcing backing from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

Here’s a snippet of what Cruz had to say, in a news release from the Labrador campaign: “(Labrador’s) fierce commitment to conservative values, his respect for our Constitution, and his pledge to making government accountable to the people will make him a great governor and I’m proud to endorse his candidacy.”

The news release makes no mention of Cruz’s presidential run in 2016. Labrador endorsed Cruz during the 2016 primaries — joining the Cruz camp a couple of weeks before Cruz’s win in the Idaho GOP primary. Later, during the fall election, Labrador stumped extensively for GOP nominee (and now president) Donald Trump.

The Cruz endorsement comes one week after Mitt Romney, the GOP’s 2012 presidential nominee, endorsed Boise developer and physician Tommy Ahlquist.

“As a former governor, I can tell you that Tommy is uniquely suited to bring new ideas and a fresh approach to leading Idaho as its next governor,” Romney said at an Idaho Falls rally.

Labrador, Ahlquist and Lt. Gov. Brad Little are the leading Republican candidates to succeed retiring Gov. Butch Otter.
