For the second time in a week, Cindy Wilson has called state superintendent Sherri Ybarra a no-show.

Ybarra’s Democratic challenger issued a news release Monday morning, criticizing the Republican incumbent for missing a State Board of Education meeting.

On Thursday, the State Board voted to add Northwest Nazarene University and the College of Idaho to the Apply Idaho program, which allows high school students to submit multiple college applications free of charge.

The board voted 4-1 to expand the program. Ybarra was one of three State Board members to miss the vote. A spokeswoman said Ybarra missed the vote because she was home preparing for a vacation, which began Friday and runs through July 6.

Wilson said Ybarra’s absence continued a “pattern of inattention” dating back at least to the 2018 legislative session.

“With the substantial problems facing our public schools today — inadequate funding, a funding formula that short-changes many rural districts, school security, just to name a few — it is critical that the state superintendent work closely with the Board of Education and Legislature to shape important policy issues and make the case for adequate resources,” Wilson said. “A no-show superintendent can’t get the job done. I will.”

Wilson took to Twitter Tuesday to criticize Ybarra for missing a state Land Board meeting. “At Lincoln Auditorium for monthly Land Board meeting,” Wilson wrote. “My opponent isn’t here. I wonder if shes (sic) working on her late campaign finance report?”

Ybarra participated in the Land Board meeting by phone, which is allowed. The Ybarra campaign turned in a finance report on the evening of June 18, four days after the deadline.

The Ybarra campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday morning.
