A bill is in the works to allow Idahoans with an enhanced concealed carry permit to bring guns into schools.

Rep. Chad Christensen, R-Ammon, hopes to introduce the bill in the next few days, Nathan Brown of the Idaho Falls Post Register reported Saturday.

“The biggest issue, I feel, is the gun-free school zones are a soft target for would-be shooters,” Christensen told Brown.

If passed, this bill would relax existing restrictions on weapons in schools, and cut school administrators out of the decisionmaking process.

State law allows teachers or school staff to carry weapons, but first, they must get approval from district trustees or charter administrators. A handful of schools — mostly in remote and rural communities — have allowed school employees to carry weapons.

Quinn Perry, the Idaho School Boards Association’s policy and government affairs director, told Brown that her group hasn’t seen the bill but would likely oppose it.
