The Idaho State Board of Education elected a new officers during its meeting Thursday afternoon at the University of Idaho.

Twin Falls board member Don Soltman was elected president, replacing past president Ken Edmunds. Soltman had served as vice president on the eight-member panel.

In other action Wednesday, board members elected Ashton member Emma Atchley to serve as vice president. Atchley previously served as secretary, and fills Soltman’s old position as vice president.

Finally, the board elected Rod Lewis of Boise to serve as secretary, filling Atchley’s old spot.

The state board is an appointed, policy making body that oversees K-12 schools and the state’s colleges and universities. The membership of the board did not change Wednesday, just the officers.

Leadership on the board is elected every April, and serves for one year.

After the election, Soltman praised Edmunds’ service as the board’s past president.

“Ken has worked tirelessly over the past year to support and enhance the state’s education system to benefit all Idahoans.” Soltman said. “We are fortunate to have individuals of Ken’s caliber willing to serve on the Board.”
