Linda Clark may be the most politically active school superintendent in the state.

The Meridian School District superintendent commonly shows up at the Statehouse to testify on legislation. This year, Clark was a vocal supporter of several bills to restore pieces of Proposition 1, the school labor law rejected by voters in 2012.

Clark sits on a 31-member education reform task force, appointed by Gov. Butch Otter.

And the fact that Clark presides over the state’s largest school district, with 2012-13 fall enrollment of 37,312, does nothing to diminish her statewide profile.

No surprise, then, that Clark’s name often comes up as a potential candidate for state superintendent of public instruction. “I hear my name too,” Clark said in a recent interview.

The catch: Clark says she isn’t interested.

Clark says she is committed to finishing her academic career in Meridian.

At this point, no candidates have announced plans to run for state superintendent in 2014. Incumbent Tom Luna has said he will announce his plans by the end of the year, and one factor is Gov. Butch Otter, a fellow Republican. If Otter runs for a third term, Luna Otter says he is more likely to seek a third term himself. (Otter has said he is planning to seek a third term, although he hasn’t made a formal announcement.)

In the meantime, though, it seems safe to cross Clark off the list.
