When the Meridian School Board meets tonight, trustees will discuss the district’s 2013-14 budget — and also the fate of North Star Charter School, an Eagle K-12 school with 920 students and a $640,000 shortfall.

North Star is on firm financial footing for 2013-14, board chairman Jim Miller told the Idaho Statesman recently, after repaying some of its debts, securing access to reserve accounts and convincing bondholders to forgo $860,000 in payments. However, it’s up to the school board to consider North Star’s financial plan.

North Star opened in 2003; one of its founders is Reed DeMordaunt, an Eagle Republican who chairs the House Education Committee. North Star received four out of a possible five stars on the state’s new school rating system.

The meeting actually begins at 5:30 p.m., but with a closed executive session. The public session, including the budget public hearing and the North Star discussion, will begin at about 7 p.m., at Mountain View High School, 2000 S. Millenium Way.
