MOSCOW — The demolition of the house at 1122 King Road, Moscow, began today.
The house where four University of Idaho students were murdered in November 2022 was given to the university by the former property owners. U of I has planned to demolish the house since it took ownership, but delayed those plans until today.
The FBI, as well as the prosecution and defense teams involved in Bryan Kohberger’s planned murder trial, all had a chance to inspect and document the structure before its demolition.
Some family members of the victims have objected to the demolition, concerned the house might serve as evidence in Kohberger’s trial. The Goncalves family’s Facebook page posted a statement this morning that asks the “Latah County Prosecutors Office and the University of Idaho to stop this madness” of destroying the house.
“It is the grim reminder of the heinous act that took place there,” U of I President Scott Green said in a statement in the fall when today’s demolition was announced. “While we appreciate the emotional connection some family members of the victims may have to this house, it is time for its removal and to allow the collective healing of our community to continue.”
U of I said Germer Construction of Moscow will serve as general contractor for the demolition. Germer will perform site rehabilitation, grading, utility disconnection and demolition assistance, at a reduced cost to the university.
During the demolition, which may take several days, King Road will be blocked off to traffic and on-street parking will be suspended.
