Core coalition keeps building

The Catholic Schools of Idaho and the Idaho Charter School Network are the two newest groups to announce their support for the Idaho Core Standards, which raise the bar for what students learn in math and English. The standards are required by Idaho law to be implemented in all districts this year.

Idahoans for Excellence in Education, started in July by the Idaho Business for Education (IBE), now has 22 members.

“While there is no mandate or requirement for Catholic schools to adopt the Idaho Core Standards, we believe they will enhance the educational programs at our schools and in no way compromise the Catholic identity of a Catholic school,” said Bob Sobotta, Superintendent of Idaho Catholic Schools. “We enthusiastically endorse the Idaho Core Standards.”

The standards were developed with the support of state schools superintendent Tom Luna and state lawmakers. The standards were approved by the State Board of Education in 2010 and approved by the Legislature in 2011. Since then, Idaho teachers and school districts have been developing curriculum to start teaching to the standards.
