It’s March Madness — legislative election style.
The two-week candidate filing period opened Monday morning, running through 5 p.m. on March 15.
All 105 legislative seats will be on the ballot, in the May 21 primary elections and the Nov. 5 general election. And even though the filing period is just getting started, the election is well underway.
Some incumbents and challengers have already raised tens of thousands of dollars for the 2024 election — fueled by some early, big-money donations from special interest groups. Contested GOP primaries are looming for several key members of the House and Senate education committees — such as House chair Julie Yamamoto of Caldwell; House vice chair Lori McCann of Lewiston; Sen. Scott Herndon, R-Sagle; and Sen. Brian Lenney, R-Nampa.
Meanwhile, two members of legislative leadership — Senate Assistant Majority Leader Abby Lee, R-Fruitland, and House Assistant Minority Leader Lauren Necochea, D-Boise — have announced they will not seek re-election.
