Student-designed healing garden and memorial nears completion

The University of Idaho will dedicate a student-designed campus memorial during the first week of fall classes.

The Vandal Healing Garden and Memorial dedication ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 21.

University of Idaho College of Art and Architecture students worked this summer on the student-designed Vandal Healing Garden and Memorial.

The memorial will honor all students who died while enrolled at the U of I. A sculpture will honor U of I students Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves and Maddie Mogen, who were slain in an off-campus house in November 2022.

U of I College of Art and Architecture students designed and built the memorial.

“The garden is an incredible reflection of our students and how much they have cared about this project,” Dean of Students Blaine Eckles said in a news release. “It is a legacy that will outlast any of our time here. This student-led project shows the dedication, care and resilience of our student body. It truly showcases what it means to be a Vandal and honors our lost Vandals in a beautiful manner.”

The garden is located on MacLean Field, between the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences building and the Physical Education building.

Donations and in-kind contributions covered the cost of the project, and the U of I is still accepting donations.
