Coeur d’Alene teacher honored by Yale University
Lynda LeBlanc, a Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy french teacher, has been recognized by the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions as a recipient of the 2018 Yale Educator Award.
Students entering the Yale Class of 2022 were asked to nominate outstanding educators who have deeply impacted their lives. LeBlanc was nominated for the award by Sydney Morrison, one of her former students.
Sponsored by the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the award recognizes educators from around the world who inspire and support their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence.
Of this year’s 371 nominees, who represent 42 U.S. states and 12 countries, 59 teachers and 28 counselors were selected by a committee of Yale admissions officers to receive the award. The winners receive engraved desk sets and congratulatory letters, and administrators of the high schools were notified of their achievement.

Grab a cup of coffee to support STEM
For every cup of coffee purchased at Dutch Bros on Sept. 29 the company will donate $1 from each drink sold at its Boise and Meridian locations to Reuseum Educational Inc. to fund scholarships to STEM camps for underserved and underprivileged kids.
The Idaho STEM Action Center is matching the Dutch Bros donation 50 cents on the dollar. The Idaho Legislature created the STEM Action Center in 2015 as a way to highlight the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines and to encourage more students to study those subjects and prepare for 21st century careers.
Idaho Commission for Libraries awards grants to schools
The Idaho Commission for Libraries awarded $182,000 in grant funding to 39 school libraries for the 2018-19 school year. Each school library received between $2,000 and $5,000.
The school libraries will use the funds to purchase quality, age-appropriate fiction and non-fiction books for elementary school students. The funding ensures that the kindergarten and first-grade students are allowed to check out at least two books per week.
In addition, the grant funding will enable 26 of the school libraries to allow students in all grade levels to check out more than one book per week.
“Research verifies that children who are not reading on grade level by the end of first grade only have a one in eight chance of ever catching up without costly
direct intervention,” said Staci Shaw, a youth services consultant.
