Free school supplies benefit 12,500 students

Nearly $77,000 in school supplies are being delivered to Treasure Valley K-8 schools this week, thanks to the Assistance League of Boise. Volunteers are sorting, packing and delivering boxes to 95 Boise, Meridian and Kuna schools.

“There is so much need for students to have new school supplies,” said Laurel Neilson, chairwoman of Operation School Supplies. “We are working hard to get the issue fixed.”

Operation School Supplies began in 1989 and is funded by grants, donations and Assistance League thrift store purchases. The supplies are purchased through Fred Meyer and will benefit 12,500 students.

“At the end of the day, we feel very tired, but our hearts are full,” Neilson said.

Once the supplies are delivered to the schools, teachers and counselors distribute to students in need throughout the school year.Operation School Supplies1
