A day after Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue called out Melba school administrators, district Superintendent Andrew Grover has responded.

“We have in place a workable emergency plan and have had the sheriff’s office work with us in the past as we practice the implementation of this plan,” Grover said in a guest opinion in Thursday’s Idaho Press-Tribune. “It has always been a win-win working relationship. The only thing that has changed with the sheriff’s office is the sheriff.”

Donahue, elected last year and sworn in in January, ripped Melba officials for failing to work with law enforcement on a school safety plan.

In an April 23 letter, quoted in Wednesday’s Idaho Press-Tribune, Donahue wrote: “Although reasonable minds can disagree about all manner of issues, District Superintendent Grover’s stubborn refusal to entertain law enforcement recommendations regarding potential active shooter situations is extremely troubling.”

The tensions between Donahue and Grover went public Wednesday amidst reports of two separate investigations in Melba schools: a reported rape at Melba High School; and sexual abuse complaints involving a teacher who no longer works in Melba schools.

Donahue accused Melba officials of failing to cooperate with the investigations. Grover denied the allegation. “As far as my knowledge goes, the legal authorities have been contacted within a timely manner with issues that warrant their involvement.”

A suspect, a male juvenile, has been arrested in connection with the reported rape.
