Fulcher tweaks Otter on Common Core

Launching into the election year, state Sen. Russ Fulcher criticized Gov. Butch Otter on several fronts.

Including Common Core.

“The governor views Common Core as a solution to our state’s education problems,” Fulcher, R-Meridian, said in a guest opinion, published in Thursday’s Idaho Falls Post Register. (Here’s the link to the guest opinion, but the piece is behind a paywall.) “I don’t see it that way. Under a Fulcher administration, parents and their children will see better outcomes in education through local control. Students will be challenged and teachers will get the resources they need.”

Fulcher, who is challenging Otter in the May 20 GOP primary, did not elaborate on how he would replace the Idaho Core Standards in mathematics and English language arts.

As a member of the Senate Education Committee, Fulcher endorsed the Common Core standards in 2011, when they received unanimous committee support.
